Now featuring permanently bonded Velcro Hook backs.
ICEVENTS® Classic Plate Carrier Ventilation Pontoons provide stand-off ventilation and padding against hard body armor inside your plate carrier or under your soft body armor vest for your chest and back. Stand-off ventilation inside your plate carrier or soft body armor vest promotes convective thermoregulation (a.k.a "evaporative cooling" - click here to learn more about the different methods of heat transfer) and eliminating hotspots. ICEVENTS® Classic Ventilation Pontoons are the ultimate plate backer.
Say goodbye to heavy, bulky, and crude legacy body armor ventilation made from insulating, absorbing foam and switch to wafer-thin, ultra light, and hydrophobic ICEVENTS®. ICEVENTS® connect directly to the inside of all body armor equipped with body-facing loop fields/pontoon strips like our ICEPLATE EXO® Ultralight Ventilated Plate Carrier. If your carrier is not equipped with internal loop Velcro pontoons like ICEPLATE EXO®, we created our CATAMARAN Universal Body Armor Ventilation Adapter Panel. CATAMARAN provides a loop Velcro surface for mounting ICEVENTS® Classic Ventilation Pontoons to any plate carrier. ICEVENTS® Classic Plate Carrier Ventilation Pontoons are designed for use on your torso (front and/or back). They are not intended for use as shoulder pads. For ICEVENTS® plate carrier shoulder pads, click here.
ICEVENTS® Classic Plate Carrier Ventilation Pontoons are available in black. They are completely covered by your armor and your body...even if we made these in Coyote Brown, nobody would see your ninja-ness.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All ICEVENTS® Classic products use the same footprint. All ICEVENTS® Aero products use the same footprint. The only difference is the backing (PowerMesh, hook backed, hook-receptive loop backed) and the size (all pads are full size except holster pads which are half size).
Each Package Includes:
- 2x ICEVENTS® Classic Plate Carrier Ventilation Pontoons
- 2x Velcro Loop Cut pieces to be sewn onto plate carriers not equipped with pontoon loop strips
- Click here for sewing instructions (STRENUOUS APPLICATIONS)
- CATAMARAN is recommended for any plate carrier that does not have loop Velcro fields on the inside of the plate bag (optional)
ICEVENTS® are ideal for dry and arid climates where evaporative cooling is effective. For humid climates, we recommend the unrivaled conductive cooling power of ICEPLATE® Curve.

I got the pontoons and the icevents low pro shoulder pads. I have both on a Haley Thorax. Going into it, I was expecting more. They do help with keeping the part of your body they’re touching less hot, and help a little bit with distributing load. Little and less being the key words. No noticeable difference imo and for the price I expect noticeable (I had to really dig in and compare how I felt with & w/o). I find them between comfortable and uncomfortable to wear. The honeycomb is fine and breaks in quick, but the liner of the fabric is sharp and often scratches into my shoulders and sides (pontoons are on a cummerbund). 3 stars for $75-100 products. Would be 4 if they were 2/3 that price. Expectation management. Will do a YouTube review soon.
Thank you for taking the time to share an honest account of your ICEVENTS® Classic Plate Carrier Ventilation Pontoons experience. While ICEVENTS® have tens of thousands of extremely satisfied, performance-minded customers, they are not a perfect fit for everyone. That said, we think some additional context will help set you up for success.
We have a number of resources on our INSIGHTS blog and our YouTube Channel to help customers understand the differences between an ICEPLATE® experience and an ICEVENTS® experience. TLDR: ICEPLATE® uses conduction, so the 'feeling' will be extremely high contrast because of the power involved. ICEVENTS® use convection, so the feeling will be more subtle. Think of the difference you 'feel' from sweating...while you don’t “feel” cold, sweating cools your body thanks to the magic of physics. If you are looking for a super high contrast experience to help you maximize your performance in the field (we never underestimate the power of confidence in the field), ICEPLATE® is probably the better performance product for you. Here are some links to those resources - we hope they are helpful:
Methods of Heat Transfer
Human Cooling Basics:
Why are ICEVENTS® so expensive?
It is important to analyze ICEVENTS® performance in the context of your specific setup. While ICEVENTS® themselves empirically outperform every other form of padding on the market today and they will improve any setup to which they are added (mileage varies), their performance can be restricted by the setup itself. When used with less breathable plate carrier designs/materials, the convective power of ICEVENTS® is limited by those materials, especially when they block the largest surface area exposure with a material like spacer mesh. The THORAX uses spacer mesh to line the cummerbund. Spacer mesh is actually an insulator which inhibits both convective air flow and heat dissipation. This is not us speaking poorly of the THORAX (quite the opposite as we’ve always enjoyed a friendly relationship with HSP and still do today, we’ve also featured their products in our marketing photography for years with products provided to us by HSP). We’re merely attempting to provide some purely empirical context for analysis. Here is an article from our INSIGHTS blog with the empirical evidence for why we do not use spacer mesh. It uses FLIR images and laser thermometer readings to show the differences in performance between spacer mesh and the materials we use to build members of the IceAge Ecosystem:
ICEVENTS®, no matter how capable, cannot make a plate carrier like the THORAX deliver the same Thermal Transmittance performance as say the Ferro Concepts FCPC V5 or the T.Rex Arms AC1.
If you’d like to see the empirical data for how THORAX performs compared to other plate carriers on the market today, including Thermal Transmittance, our Best Plate Carriers 2024 article is a great resource:
Speaking purely from an empirical/science/engineering perspective, ICEVENTS® are unrivaled in their ability to distribute load while providing convective ventilation. This detailed article from our INSIGHTS blog provides the empirical results from our testing:
Again, speaking strictly from a technical standpoint, “break-in” is purely a placebo effect since the anisotropic architecture of ICEVENTS® has no memory.
As noted on the product page, ICEVENTS® can be trimmed to accommodate any difference in body type, fit, based entirely on the preferences of the end-user.
We hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any additional questions. #StayFrosty
Literally beats the Texas heat. I’m sold. Glad I purchased these. Will be getting the shoulder pads and possibly extra for my cummerbund also
It quickly releases the heat generated inside the Vest and lowers the temperature of the body.
Sweat but induce quick drying.
It also halves the uncomfortable feeling of clothes sticking to the body.
This product is recommended as a functional product that helps maintain the same freshness as before wearing it.
Plug and play solution for the SKD FirstSpear STT PC: Comfortable and no modifications needed. Haven't tested long term, but is relatively comfortable compared to the stock plate carrier. Having had good prior experience with Qore products, I can whole heartedly recommend.
Not my first time ordering from Qore and definitely won’t be my last! This makes it way more comfortable to wear a heavy plate carrier for much longer. I bet it’ll also help keep me a bit cooler once the heat starts hitting us here in VA. Looking forward to supporting y’all more!
As a current Law Enforcement Officer in South Florida, the summer heat and humidity is something that is a daily battle. I had recently purchased the IceVents for my shoulders and the front and back of my outer carrier. The shoulder vents provide great relief for load bearing. The vents for the front and back are barely noticeable and provide the perfect amount of space to allow air flow without being uncomfortable. I would highly recommend these products and I have also just purchased the vent for the Safariland holster as Qore continues to provide quality products.
I was getting some neck/shoulder pain with the original shoulder strap padding. After changing up to Qore Ice Vents I could not believe what a difference it made. I plan to line my tactical belt and heavy entry kit with ice vents as well!
In14yrs of working on the east coast of Australia (currently in Bondi) as a General Duties Sgt, senior weapons trainer & public order & riot specialist, dealing with the heat has been a constant issue. Particularly under my Integrated Light Armour Vest, which I wear at all times, even in the middle of summer!
Six weeks ago I installed IceVent classic pads in my vest and immediately noticed an improvement. It still gets just as hot under the vest, but I’ve noticed the heat is able to dissipate faster. I’ve also noticed my vest isn’t gathering sweat and, as a result, is not smelling and requires laundering less often.
I am considering fitting IceVent pads under the shoulder straps of my vest & will post my feedback on them in the future.
I purchased two sets, one for my JPC shoulder straps and on set for my front plate bag. The set applied to my shoulder straps made a remarkable redistribution of weight for my level 4 plates.
I will be returning the pair for my plate bag because I was not comfortable with adhering the pads directly to the fabric on my carrier.
These create that airgap between your chest and the plate carrier and increases the airflow underneath. The only thing is if you're shirtless it can get uncomfortable, otherwise 5/5.
