WHICH VARIANT SHOULD I BUY?
Cummerbund Variants:
Side Strap - Buy this if you want the slimmest, lightest, faster variant or if you want to use a different cummerbund.
AXL Equinox Cummerbund - Buy this if you want a turn-key, out of the box load-bearing cummerbund with adjustability and quick-release capability. We sell the ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 with a color matched AXL Equinox Cummerbund in the S/M size. The S/M Equinox Cummerbund is 11 MOLLE channels (17.5" long).
For alternative colors/ patterns and the L/XL cummerbund with 14 MOLLE channels (22" long), we recommend purchasing the Side Strap ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 variant and ordering the AXL Equinox Cummerbund of your choice from axladvanced.com.
Material Variants:
Berry Compliant Material - This variant is made from Berry Amendment compliant material, meaning the ICEPLATE EXO® Laminate is 100% sourced and manufactured in the U.S. This is essential for large ($150,000+) U.S. Military acquisitions or for those who prefer entirely U.S.-sourced materials.
USMCA Compliant Material -
Our new USMCA variants use laminate made in Mexico, compliant with USMCA standards. This material provides the same strength, durability, and lightweight, hydrophobic properties as our other variants, but at a more accessible price point.

What is the difference between USMCA Compliant and Berry Compliant materials?
IMPORTANT UPDATE JULY 31, 2024: Recently, a close US Ally contacted us about making modifications to ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 to meet the requirements of a newly issued plate carrier contract for their military. They specifically requested we make these changes in the MultiCam colorway. We were already working on these changes and modifications for a future version of ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3, but this contract requirement accelerated our implementation of these modifications. In line with our belief in empowered individuals, we are making these modifications to ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 in MultiCam and Ranger Green effective immediately and available to all, ensuring that you can get your hands on the latest version without delay.
Updates are as follows:
1. Shoulder strap width reduced to 1.5" for compatibility with 1.5” don/doff hardware (sold separately, First Spear Tubes shown for demonstration only). First Spear Tubes as a standalone product are only available on the FS website per their Tubes Licensing Agreement. We are only allowed to sell them "as part of a manufactured product." You want to purchase the 2" model here. We say "one point five inch" because that is the measurement of the strap pass through. However, FS calls them "two inch" because they only measure edge to edge and don't mention the dimensions of the strap pass through. Although First Spear Tubes are shown, ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 is compatible with any 1.5" quick release hardware on the market today.
2. Additional vertical SwiftClip slits create two different mounting heights for placards/QASM buckle accessories.
3. Additional negative MAPS row for Admin/EUD mounting optionality.
4. Internal Open Architecture Shoulder Straps for incredible “lay flat” shoulder strap angle of attack and comfort.
5. Standard MAPS spacing for upper portion of rear plate bag and half-spacing for lower portion of rear plate bag for precision pouch placement.
6. Vertically oriented lateral MOLLE slits for dedicated cummerbund routing.

FAQs
Setting up your plate carrier largely depends on personal preference and operational requirements. The setup can vary based on the type of mission, the gear required, and personal comfort. For guidance on optimizing your setup for specific scenarios, such as minimalistic or home defense configurations, visit our comprehensive guides on plate carrier setup, minimalist plate carrier setup, and home defense plate carrier setup.
NIJ Level III+ plates are classified as hard armor. They are specifically engineered to stop rifle rounds, which are significantly more powerful than handgun rounds typically addressed by soft armor. Level III hard armor plates provide essential protection to vital organs by deflecting high-velocity ballistic threats that soft armor cannot.
DFNDR Armor Level III+ C plates are constructed from Fiber-Lite Laminate combined with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), bound by a resin matrix. This composition results in a hard, stand-alone armor system that includes Spall-Tek to mitigate spall and deflection of projectile fragments. These materials ensure that the armor not only offers superior ballistic protection but also remains lightweight and durable.
To maintain the integrity and performance of your armor plates and plate carrier, store them in a dry, cool environment out of direct sunlight. Regularly inspect for any signs of damage or wear. Clean the carrier as per manufacturer instructions, avoiding harsh chemicals that could degrade the materials. For the plates, a damp cloth can be used for cleaning. Always follow the specific care guidelines provided with ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 to ensure maximum longevity and protection.
In the United States, it is legal for all law-abiding civilians to purchase and own body armor. You have the right to protect yourself and your family. Keep in mind, certain states, like California and Illinois, have proposed legislation to restrict civilian ownership, though these measures have not been enacted. Body armor owners need to stay informed about local state laws to ensure compliance. Always check the latest legal requirements in your jurisdiction before purchasing body armor.
ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 brings significant enhancements for improved wearability and functionality.
The shoulder straps are now crafted with a single layer of EXO Laminate, reducing stiffness and incorporating quick-release features. The front plate bag has been redesigned with less material and more strategic Velcro® placements for better fit and usability, fully compatible with EUD/ATAC systems. The rear plate bag has expanded compatibility with MOLLE accessories, and the plate closure flap features a new lock-up system that conforms better to plate curvature. Finally, the quick-release cummerbund now includes AXL Equinox technology for increased structural rigidity and ease of use.

The majority of users will find the Medium size optimal. Your front plate should align with your Sternal Angle and be centered along your mid-clavicular line. Position the top of your back plate roughly an inch or two vertebrae below your Vertebra prominens and the bottom one to three inches above your navel.
This varies slightly based on individual height and torso length. For more detailed guidance, check out this article.
Yes, ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3 features both front and rear plate bags suitable for plates or ICEPLATE®s. You can attach up to three IMS Pro Combos on ICEPLATE EXO® Gen 3: one on the body-facing side of the front plate bag, one on the body-facing side of the rear plate bag, and one on the world-facing side of the rear plate bag. For extreme conditions, it’s possible to equip the front plate bag with IMS Pro as well.
For additional configurations, check out this article.
Over 80% of our customers use a Medium size, which offers the best fit due to the curvature of the ESAPI plates, enhancing body contour compatibility.
Level III plates typically offer ample protection for civilians, law enforcement, and some military personnel against most threats. However, Level IV plates provide an extra layer of protection where necessary.
For a detailed breakdown of plate levels, check out this article.
The choice between a plate carrier and a chest rig depends on specific needs, conditions, required gear, and personal preferences.
